Non-Invasive Laser Corrects Vision without Cutting

Non-Invasive Laser Corrects Vision without Cutting
Jun-04-18
A new non-invasive laser technique could permanently correct vision with no need for surgery.

Developed by a team from Columbia University, the new method eliminates the need for flap cutting and ablation, relying instead on a femtosecond oscillator. This laser—which can deliver very quick pulses of low energy—ionizes the cornea’s water molecule, triggering new chemical bonds that alter the tissue’s biochemical and biomechanical properties. These new bonds will change the structure of the cornea, in turn changing the eye’s refractive power and correcting the patient’s vision.
