The NOVA smart cane attachment helps the visually impaired by detecting obstacles via ultrasound.
Developed by the team at Texas A&M, the Navigational & Object Visual Assistant (NOVA) cane is equipped with an ultrasonic sensor that will trigger vibrating motors if it detects an object in its path. The sensor is focused on detecting objects above the waist, which are difficult for a standard cane to locate. The NOVA cane also communicates with a smartphone app that could add verbal navigation cues as well as a GPS function.
