The NoVAqua system harvests the nutrients from seafood process wastewater for use in the food chain and packaging.
Processing seafood, such as boiling shrimp or marinating herring, results in wastewater that still contains usable proteins and micronutrients. To harvest these nutrients, the NoVAqua (Extracting Novel Values from Aqueous Seafood Side Streams) process relies on a two-step process that causes the fats and proteins to bunch together and then float to the surface for collection.
According to the team, the harvested biomass and nutrient-rich liquid could be used as fish food and a glaze to protect frozen fish.
