OcuCheck Measures Vitamin C to Determine Eye Injuries

OcuCheck Measures Vitamin C to Determine Eye Injuries
Dec-11-15
The OcuCheck system offers a portable and quick way to evaluate the seriousness of eye injuries by measuring the amount of vitamin C on the surface of the eye.

Created by a team from the University of Illinois, the OcuCheck works on the knowledge that the vitreous gel inside the eye contains more ascorbic acid (vitamin C) than the eye’s tear film. By measuring the amount of ascorbic acid in the victim’s tear film, the device allows the clinician to determine if the eye is actually leaking its internal fluid, and to what extent—thereby determining the seriousness of the injury.
