The reusable Oleo Sponge invention can absorb oil both on and below the surface of the water.
Developed by the Argonne National Laboratory, the Oleo Sponge was made from a common polyurethane foam modified with a thin layer of metal oxide primer near the sponge’s surface. Oil-loving molecules were then attached the layer, causing the sponge to attract oil and diesel rather than water, both on and beneath the surface. The Oleo Sponge can also be reused, and the captured oil recovered.
