Optical Fibers Stretch Further to Monitor More

Optical Fibers Stretch Further to Monitor More
Oct-13-17
A new highly elastic optical fiber able to measure minute body movements could have applications ranging from medicine to video games.

The optical fiber relies on a silicon core made of a soft polymer, which the team formed into thin, transparent fibers able to stretch to twice their size while still accurately transferring light from one end to the other. The fiber also returns to its original length after being stretched.

The team hopes the stretchable fiber could be used to monitor the motions of different body parts, with applications ranging from rehabilitation to video games.
