Optisort Uses AI to Sort Batteries for Recycling

Optisort Uses AI to Sort Batteries for Recycling
Dec-23-12
The Optisort uses artificial intelligence to sort different types of batteries, keeping heavy metals out the environment while ensuring useful battery components are re-used.

The Optisort uses a camera and a computerized brain to recognize the pattern of the batteries, and can currently identify about 2000 kinds. As the batteries are fed into the machine by conveyor belt, each one is photographed and compared to a database until the match is found. One the battery has been identified, it is sent by a puff of compressed air into the appropriate bin. The Optisort can process about ten batteries per second and can learn over time, which allows it to recognize damaged or dirty batteries as well.
