Oral Sensor Tracks Salt Intake

Oral Sensor Tracks Salt Intake
May-09-18
An oral sodium sensor that monitors salt intake could help reduce complications from hypertension or diabetes.

Developed by a team from the Georgia Institute of Technology, the prototype device resembles a standard retainer, and is equipped with an elastomeric membrane embedded with a sensor able to track sodium intake in real time. The data is transmitted via Bluetooth to a companion app, allowing the user and their doctors to monitor their salt and help with planning meals.

The team hopes to eventually minimize the device as well as replace the battery with one that can be powered wirelessly.
