Researchers have developed a new, environmentally-friendly battery designed for power plants that could be used to store large amounts of energy for use when needed.
Free of metals or toxic materials, the water-based battery has a lifespan of about 15 years or 5000 recharge cycles, compared to the 1000 cycles of lithium ion batteries. It is based on a redox flow design, consisting of two tanks containing the electroactive materials that can be built as large as is required, and the energy release can be controlled to move faster or slower.
The key to the battery's eco-friendly nature lies in the researchers' use of quinones for the electrocative material—naturally occurring oxidized organic compounds. These compounds, common in plants, fungi and bacteria, are the molecules used by nature to transfer energy.
