Origami Biobattery Folds into a Star for More Power
Jun-09-16
An innovative new paper-based biobattery folded like a ninja star could be used to power small devices in the field.

The star-like design allowed the team to fit eight battery modules into one unit, increasing the efficiency of the device. After a drop of dirty water is placed in the center, the battery can be opened to its full diameter to prompt the water to travel through the channels and into the fuel cells, promoting a chemical reaction.

According to the team, the new battery can power an LED for about 20 minutes, and could have applications a low-cost battery in HIV and pregnancy tests.
