A simple test made up of an origami paper strip can diagnose malaria in the field with a 98 percent accuracy.

Developed by a team led by the University of Glasgow, the paper-based test was made by printing patterns of hot wax on the paper and then melting the wax to bond it to the paper. After a blood sample is placed in a wax channel, the paper is folded to direct the blood into specific channels and then heated. This causes the malaria parasite’s DNA to copy and become easier to detect before being exposed to the LAMP process, a field-ready technology that will test the blood for evidence of the parasite.
