Owl Wings Help Silence Turbines

Owl Wings Help Silence Turbines
Jul-09-17
The natural serrations on owl wings have inspired a quieter turbine blade.

Owls are known for their silent flight, which makes them excellent nocturnal hunters. To harness this ability—and help promote the use of turbines—researchers in China have developed turbine blades with serrated leading edges that mimic the owl’s wing. The serrations reduce the air turbulence it flows over the blade, in turn reducing the sound without overly affecting performance.
