Oxygen-Carrying Protein May Lead to Artificial Blood

Oxygen-Carrying Protein May Lead to Artificial Blood
Apr-01-09
A new protein has been developed which can accomplish the same feat as other certain prooteins in the human body: carry blood.

Most current blood substitutes use modified hemoglobin, which is the component that the human body uses to carry blood, however many studies show that blood substitutes created with modified hemoglobin can increase the risk of heart attacks in people who have received transfusions with this artificial blood.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania has focussed their attention on creating an entirely new protein from scratch, and this new protein has shown to avoid some of the problems associated with modified hemoglobin.
