Pacifier Tracks Infant Glucose Levels

Pacifier Tracks Infant Glucose Levels
Oct-24-19
A pacifier able to track glucose levels could offer a safe and comfortable way to diagnose and treat diabetes in infants.

The proof-of-concept pacifier was developed by a team from the University of California and the University of Alcalá to offer an alternative to the more invasive biosensors that are typically used to track glucose levels. Instead, the pacifier features a pump powered by the sucking motions of the infant that moves the baby’s saliva to a sensor in the detection chamber. There, an enzyme reacts with the glucose to produce a detectable electric signal that indicates the amount of glucose in the sample, with the results sent to a paired device.
