Paper Sensor Measures Glucose in Saliva

Paper Sensor Measures Glucose in Saliva
Dec-21-18
A paper-based sensor able to measure blood glucose in saliva could replace the need for painful needle pricks.

The low-cost, affordable sensor was created by a team at KAUST University by printing microscale electrodes onto glossy paper with an ink containing electrically-conductive polymers. A layer of the enzyme glucose oxidase was then applied, followed by a nafion polymer membrane coating that prevents interference and increases the shelf life of the sensor. When saliva is applied to the strip, any available glucose will react with the enzyme and create electrical signals relative to the blood glucose levels.
