Passive Cooling System Relies on High-Tech Parasol

Passive Cooling System Relies on High-Tech Parasol
Nov-30-18
A passive cooling system from the team at MIT could help save energy as well as preserve food and medicines in off-grid areas.

Made of inexpensive materials, the system emits heat at the mid-infrared range, which allows it to travel through the atmosphere and into space. The passive cooling system is an improvement on previous iterations in that it does not rely on complicated photonic devices.

Instead, the MIT team achieved the required selective reflectivity and emissivity by using a narrow strip to block the direct sunlight as the sun moves through the sky, preventing the system from being heated by the sun. With the addition of this ‘parasol’ and some insulation, the passive cooling system was able to achieve a cooling of 11 degrees F below ambient temperature.
