Permanent Artificial Heart

Permanent Artificial Heart
Mar-09-18
A new permanent artificial heart could eliminate the need for heart transplants.

In development by the team at Oregon Health and Science University and the spinoff OregonHeart, the device is designed with only one moving part, a hollow rod suspended inside a titanium tube on hydrodynamic bearings. The artificial heart will move blood to the lungs and then through the body, while also mimicking a natural pulse—minimizing the risk of clotting. The heart is powered by a rechargeable battery pack that can be worn on a belt, or perhaps eventually implanted under the skin.
