Unique phase-switching liquids could offer a more resilient and effective de-icing coating that will not wash away.
While typical de-icers require multiple applications of heat and chemicals, the material developed by the team from the University of Illinois at Chicago will remain active on the surface much longer. The material consists of phase-switching liquids (PSLs) that will turn solid at below-freezing temperatures, staying in place and releasing trapped heat that causes water droplets to become mobile and delay the formation of frost.
