An innovative picowatt-power wake-up timer could drastically reduce the power consumption of IoT sensors.
As convenient as the Internet of Things promises to be, the need for its connected devices to always on in case of command consumes a substantial amount of power. To reduce the power need, the team from the National University of Singapore created a wake-up timer that requires no additional circuitry. Developed for use on rarely-active sensor nodes, the timer can be powered by a tiny on-chip solar cell with a diameter similar to the human air, which allows the device to function in ambient light as dim as moonlight.
