Embedding PET with plant fibers encourages recycling by resulting in a material better than the original.
Although PET plastic is recyclable, the recycled material is a lesser-quality material—and so people usually do not bother. To encourage reuse of PET, a team from the National Renewable Energy Lab melted the discarded plastic and then embedded the liquid with waste plant biomass. The result was two kinds of new, fiber-reinforced rPET up to three times stronger than the original material.
