A new technology uses electricity, plastic and nanoparticles to create a bulb for large scale lighting that could replace compact fluorescents.
Developed by researchers at Wake Forest University, the flicker-free, shatterproof plastic bulb is based on field-induced polymer electroluminescent (FIPEL) technology. Instead of a yellow or blue tinted light, the new bulb emits a soft, white glow that perfectly matches the spectrum of the sun. The bulb can also be easily molded into a variety of shapes, contains no mercury or caustic chemicals, and will not create heat while emitting light.
The first production runs are scheduled for 2013.
