Plastic Lightens Washing Machines

Aug-04-17 A new plastic counterweight could replace the concrete blocks used in washing machines to help keep them stable.

Currently, washing machines are stabilized by heavy concrete block installed inside, which make the machines very difficult to move. To help take some of the load off of the machines during transport, the team from Nottingham Trent University developed a hollow plastic counterweight that can be filled with water after delivery.

According to the team, the plastic technology reduces the weight of the appliance by up to 30 percent.
