A spongy polymer implant that will expand to fill gaps in the spine after surgery could offer a non-invasive and affordable alternative to current methods.
Often, removing a tumor from the spine results in a gap being left behind as well, which must be filled to ensure the spine remains strong. While current options of adding supportive materials include either extensive surgery or expensive implants, the polymer implant differs in that it can be inserted via a small incision, and relies on affordable materials. The implant is made up of a hydrophilic, biocompatible polymer that will expand as it absorbs fluid, filling the space and strengthening the spine.
