Port Delivery System Delivers Medication Via an Implant

Port Delivery System Delivers Medication Via an Implant
Oct-29-18
The Port Delivery System eye implant from Genentech could help reduce the risks of blindness in older people.

The ‘wet’ form of AMD (age-related macular degeneration) is the leading cause of blindness in adults, but it can be treated. Unfortunately, the treatment requires that the patient visit the physician’s office every few weeks for an injection in the eye—which can be inconvenient and even lead people to skip the medication entirely.

As an alternative, the team from Genentech created a tiny, rice-sized device that can be loaded with the medication and then implanted permanently in the eye. Once in place, the Port Delivery System will release its cargo of drugs over time, without the need to visit a clinic. The implant reservoir can be refilled when needed, with the doses lasting up to 15 months.
