Portable Artificial Lung

Portable Artificial Lung
Mar-24-17
An artificial lung that can fit in a backpack could help bring a better quality of life to people waiting for lung transplants.

Often, patients must wait months for a lung transplant, and the devices used to support them during that time are bulky and hinder movement. To offer these patients more comfort, the team from the University of Pittsburg are working on a wearable lung that could be carried in a small pack. The Paracorporeal Ambulatory Assist Lung (PAAL) will feature a built-in blood pump and lung able to support the patient for up to three months, while still allowing mobility.
