Portable Device Detects Suicide Vests

The portable CBD-1000 was designed to bridge the current security gap by detecting concealed suicide bombs before they can be triggered.Developed by R3 Technologies in conjunction with Sandia and Los Alamos laboratories, the CBD-1000 is about the size of a cereal box, and mounts to a tripod. Once in place, the system will send out an X-band radar able to detect the materials (such as nails, rocks and ceramics) commonly used in suicide vests, which can be missed by conventional metal detector technology.

I wonder how far away this device can detect a vest wearer, also the wearer would likely be aware of the location the checkpoint.
I wonder what someone would see through InfaRed vision goggles. The body heat of the wearer would likely show absorption characteristics of someone wearing a thick vest, even through various layers of clothing.
