Portable MELISA Device Analyzes Samples with a Smartphone

Portable MELISA Device Analyzes Samples with a Smartphone
Apr-01-18
The MELISA device provides immediate blood test results without needing to send the sample to a lab.

In development by a team from the University of South Florida, the MELISA (Mobile Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) is a portable version of the ELISA, which requires trained technicians and bulky equipment. The system features a water bath heater that incubates the sample at the target temperature, after which a standard smartphone is used to take a photograph of the sample. A companion app analyzes the RGB color components of the sample, which can then be used to determine what compounds are present, with no need to send the sample to a lab.
