Portable VIRRION Device Detects Viruses Quickly

Portable VIRRION Device Detects Viruses Quickly
Dec-28-19
The affordable and portable VIRRION device detects viruses within minutes to help stop the spread of deadly diseases such as Zika and Ebola.

Developed by teams from Pennsylvania State and New York University, the VIRRION device measures only a few centimeters wide and costs much less than standard lab-based equipment. The device features a vertical array of carbon nanotubes decorated with gold nanoparticles, which enhances the Raman spectroscopy signal used to identify a particular virus. The type of virus being targeted for capture can be specified by altering the distance between the nanotubes.

The team hopes the prototype device could eventually be used to detect not only a variety of human diseases, but also animal livestock and crops.
