Preventing Burn Scars with Electrical Bursts

Preventing Burn Scars with Electrical Bursts
Aug-12-16
Researchers have developed a non-invasive method of treating burns and preventing scarring by using short bursts of electrical fields.

The technique was created by teams from Tel Aviv and Harvard University to help prevent the proliferation of collagen-producing cells that cause burn scarring. Called partial irreversible electroporation (pIRE), the process involves using high-voltage, non-thermal electric fields sent in microsecond pulses that partially destroy the collagen-producing cells in the wound. In tests during five sessions over a six-month time period, the technique showed a 58% decrease in scarring.
