The LiveTag system transforms everyday objects into connected devices that can communicate with the Internet of Things.

The team from the University of California San Diego created the LiveTags by printing copper foil patterns on a flexible substrate. The tags work like ‘mirrors’ to reflect radio signals emitted by an existing WiFi router. If a user blocks the mirror, the signal will be interrupted and trigger a chosen action.

The team demonstrated the technology by printing a “paper-thin” interface that could be used to control a music player, complete with play button and volume bar.
