Printing Freeform OLED Screens

Printing Freeform OLED Screens
Nov-02-19
A new 3D-printing technique allows OLED screens to be printed in any shape—opening the door to a new generation of transparent OLED displays.

The method, from a team at Yonsei University, relies on a Digital Light Processing system that prints the frames from the screens, followed by a five-axis electrohydrodynamic jet (e-jet) printer that builds up the screen in layers. This process allows the screens to printed in freeform shapes and embedded in frames that can also be of any shape. Working prototypes created by the team include the shape of a goblet, globe and hand, as well as a set of AR glasses with printed OLED lenses that can respond to smartphone controls.
