A new technology from the University of Michigan could allow researchers to create medications on site.
Though printing medicines is not a completely new field, the method from the Michigan team relies on a form of organic vapor-jet printing. This involves heating and evaporating a powdered form of the medication’s active ingredient, and then combining it with an inert gas. That mixture can then be deposited onto a cooled surface to form a thin film.
According to the team, the printed medications are not only as effective as standard versions, they can also dissolve more easily—potentially allowing more drugs to pass the Pharma companies’ strict solubility requirements.
