Prominence Prosthetic Foot Designed for High Heels

Prominence Prosthetic Foot Designed for High Heels
May-28-16
The Prominence prosthetic foot created by students from Johns Hopkins was designed specifically to allow women to wear high heels.

Developed in response to the growing number of women veteran amputees, the prosthetic is able to adjust to a range of heel heights without slipping, while supporting up to 250 pounds and being narrow enough to fit inside a women’s heeled shoe. To meet these standards, the device features a base made up of 28 layers of carbon fiber, a heel-adjustment mechanism made of a pair of aluminum discs, and a commercially available hydraulic unit that allows the sole to flex for a smooth gait.

The Prominence prosthetic is still in the prototype phase, but the team has received favorable reviews from test subjects.
