Proposed Luna Ring Would Beam Solar Power to Earth

Proposed Luna Ring Would Beam Solar Power to Earth
Nov-30-13
A Tokyo-based corporation has proposed a plan to gather solar energy by installing a belt of solar panels, called a Luna Ring, around our moon and then beaming the collected energy to receiving stations on Earth.

The Luna Ring would be made up of a belt of panels 250 miles wide, which would be placed around the equator of the moon. According to the Shimizu Corporation, the ring would be capable of sending 13,000 terawatts of power to earth in the form of microwave transmissions. Robots and automated equipment would be located on the moon to mine the resources and produce the materials needed to construct the ring.

Although the project is quite expensive, the Shimizu team believes construction could begin as early as 2035, and that the payoff would be a “virtually inexhaustible, non-polluting solar energy is the ultimate source of green energy.”
