Prosthetic Knee Aided by Machine Learning

Prosthetic Knee Aided by Machine Learning
Jan-24-19
An innovative powered prosthetic knee can be used comfortably in just minutes with the help of a new intelligent tuning system.

Typically, learning to use a prosthetic knee comfortably requires at least a few hours of work with a physician to tune the 12 different parameters of the device. In contrast, the new device is equipped with an array of sensors that track the wearer’s gait in real time, using reinforcement learning to detect which settings need adjusting for optimal performance. The entire process takes only about ten minutes for the user to learn to walk successfully on a level surface, and the team is currently working on improving the system so that it can continue to fine-tune to real-world conditions.
