Quick Setting Glue Could Protect Spacecraft

Quick Setting Glue Could Protect Spacecraft
Sep-22-15
Researchers have created a “space glue” that could enable space crafts and airplanes to self-heal instantly—be it from a bullet or from space debris.

To develop the self-healing mechanism, the team focused on creating a liquid resin made of compounds that could be triggered to solidify when exposed to normal air and that could be held between two solid sheets of material. The resulting resin, made of organosulphuric compounds and hydrocarbons called alkenes, will rapidly solidify when it make contact with oxygen, instantly sealing cracks and holes in the surrounding sheets of material.

In tests, the new resin was able to fill a bullet hole with a rugged polymer in under a second, faster than similar self-healing materials.
