Record-Breaking Stretchable Solar Cell Array

Record-Breaking Stretchable Solar Cell Array
Dec-30-19
An innovative and efficient stretchable solar cell design relies on triangular solar cells attached to a highly elastic polymer backing.

The deceptively simple design from the team at KAUST consists of commercially available, rigid silicon panels coated on the back with the affordable biocompatible elastomer named ecoflex. The cells were laser-cut into separate islands held together by the backing, but remained connected to the other cell islands with interdigitated back contacts. After testing a few shapes, the team determined that triangular-shaped cells offered the most flexibility while still delivering an impressive efficiency.
