Record-Setting Solar Cell Could Find Use at NASA
Dec-24-18
A record-setting solar cell from Alta Devices could help power CubeSats.

The single junction solar cell is made from gallium arsenide, which offers high efficiency and radiation resistance along with low weight and flexibility. Because the cell can also generate electricity in low light, it could be ideally suited for small satellites, UAVs and autonomous vehicles. Although gallium arsenide is expensive to produce, a technique developed by Alta results in extremely thin layers one micro thick that offers an extremely high energy density with a low amount of material—reducing system costs.
