An innovative new process takes discarded concrete and grinds it into a powder. Wood waste is added for its key ingredient, lignin, which accounts for wood's rigidity.
The concrete powder and lignin are combined with water to form a mixture that is then heated and pressurized which enables the lignin to fill the gaps between concrete particles. The resulting new concrete has a stronger malleability than the original and is also biodegradable.
It is hoped that by recycling concrete costs will be reduced and carbon emissions will be curtailed.
