Red Phosphorous Layer Prevents Battery Fires

Red Phosphorous Layer Prevents Battery Fires
Feb-25-19
A layer of red phosphorous could be the key to manufacturing safer and more affordable lithium-ion batteries.

The red phosphorous technique was developed by a team from Rice University, who used it to coat the separator in the battery that sits between the anode and cathode. The red phosphorous can detect a dendrite growth, which triggers a change in the battery’s charging voltage and alerts the battery management system to stop charging.

The red phosphorous method does not require a third electrode—unlike conventional methods—and did not significantly affect battery performance.
