Remora-Inspired Suction Cup

Remora-Inspired Suction Cup
Sep-06-19
A suction cup inspired by the remora adheres tightly underwater even under extreme forces.

The suction cup was created by the team from NJIT and the University of Akron as a way to both understand and take advantage of the remora’s impressive adhesive abilities. To that end, the team created a structure that mimics the creature’s lamellae, the rows of toothy ridges that create friction to attach the fish to the host. The researchers found that increasing the number of lamellae also increased the adhesive capability of the device, with between nine and twelve offering three times the strength of a natural remora.
