Rewriteable Paper Triggered by Temperatue

Rewriteable Paper Triggered by Temperatue

An easy-to-use, temperature-sensitive rewriteable paper could offer an alternative to one-use notes.

A team from Fujian Normal University created the paper by coating one side of a standard piece of paper with a thermochromic blue dye that is colorless at room temperature. The other side of the paper was coated with a black toner that will both conduct heat and produce it when exposed to light. To ‘write’ on the paper, the team used a heat-emitting pen on the blue side. This heated the toner beneath, causing it to become clear and allow the white paper beneath to show through.

The paper can be erased when exposed to a lower temperature or near-infrared light, and it can be manufactured in large-scale production.

Could the text vary depending on temperature and perhaps also chemicals allowing zero maintenance signs and instructions?
