James, the robotic bartender, can read a person’s body language to determine if they are ready for another drink—or too rude to be allowed one.
The "Joint Action in Multimodal Embodied Systems" robot is equipped with software that allows it to interpret a person’s body language, and serve customers in the order that it notices their need. While there have been other robotic bartenders developed in recent years, James differs in that the users do not need to learn how to order from its touchscreen or access it with a smartphone. Instead, the team behind James used video cameras to record people at bars, and learned the most common way a person attempts to order a drink from the bartender (standing facing the bar and looking at the bartender). This data was then used to program James, helping the bot to attain a new level of socially intelligent behavior and recognize when a patron is ready for another drink.
The ultimate goal of the James project is to create robots able to “deal with situations in which socially appropriate interaction is vital.”
