A new robotic drill could make the cochlear implant procedure both safer and more successful.
Implanting cochlear devices involves drilling through the bone into the middle ear, a delicate process that requires about ten years of surgeon training to ensure the patient’s balance is not affected.
Developed by a team from Brunel University, the robotic hand drill is equipped with a sensor that will cause the drill to automatically stop before reaching the inner ear endosteal membrane. According to Dr. Xinli Di, the device also drills at a slower pace, reducing the vibrations that could damage the cochlea.
