Robotic Sleeve Helps the Heart Beat

Robotic Sleeve Helps the Heart Beat
Jan-21-17
Researchers have developed a soft robotic system that fits around the heart to help it beat.

Created by a team at Harvard University, the soft robot is able to closely mimic the natural ventricular twist of the heart muscle as it beats—a feat that has been difficult in the past. The sleeve slips over the heart, where it will compress and twist in sync with the heartbeat to augment the muscle’s functioning. And since the sleeve does not come in contact with blood, the risk of clotting is reduced, eliminating the need for the patient to take blood thinners.
