Robotic Suit Carries Its Own Weight

Robotic Suit Carries Its Own Weight
Oct-22-12
The HAL robotic exoskeleton is controlled by brainwaves, allowing the wearer to operate the 130-pound suit while barely noticing its weight.

Known as HAL (Hydrid Assitive Limb), the suit was developed to protect workers from heavy radiation, with an eye toward using it during the dismantling of the Fukushima nuclear plant. It features a network of sensors able to monitor the electric signals from the wearer’s brain and active the robotic limbs in synchronicity with the human’s limbs, which takes the weight off the wearer’s muscles. Dangerous radiation is blocked by the suit’s outer layer, while internal fans circulate cooling air and an onboard computer monitors the wearer for signs of fatigue.
