Robotic Turtles Seek Out Landmines

Robotic Turtles Seek Out Landmines
May-26-17
Researchers from the University of Arizona have developed disposable robotic turtles that will sweep areas for landmines.

Unexploded landmines injure or kill up to 20,000 people per year. To help reduce these numbers, the Arizona University team created an inexpensive, origami-style robot made of cardboard and outfitted with a computer chip, motor, and sand-paddling fins. The robots can propel themselves across the ground at about five centimeters a second, adjusting their gait automatically to suit different types of terrain and tagging land mines for removal.
