Robotic Vacuum Gripper Works Without Air

Robotic Vacuum Gripper Works Without Air
Mar-26-18
A quiet, energy-efficient robotic vacuum gripper works without compressed air, and could be used in clean rooms.

Developed by a team from the University of Saarland, the gripper gets its gripping power from an artificial muscle made up of bundles of ultrafine shape memory wires that flex like natural muscles when a current is applied. The bundles are arranged in a circle, and can also sense when the system needs to adjust its grip. The wire bundle can react quickly when triggered, creating a strong and stable vacuum able to hold objects weighing up to several pounds.
