NASA is investigating the idea of using a rotor system that would let space capsule be flown like helicopters, eliminating the water landing requirement.
Currently being testing at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the system would be powered by the wind rather than by an engine—a concept that has not been used in spacecraft before. This added control would allow the capsule to be guided to a suitable landing spot rather than being forced to rely on ocean landings. The rotor system could also be built into the rocket booster frame to be unfurled as the stage falls to earth. The stage could be controlled all the way down to a gentle landing, allowing the costly engine to be recovered.
