Roving Whale Biologger

A roving biologger able to travel the surface of a whale’s body could offer valuable biological data and insight into the behavior of the sperm whale.Developed by teams from Yamagata University and Teikyo University of Science, the prototype biologger was specifically designed to offer greater insight into the feeding habits of the sperm whale. The robotic device is able to travel along the whale’s body from its back to its mouth, clinging to the curved surface of the whale with specially designed, flexible suction cups. The biologger is powered by the currents of water generated as the whale swims and can operate at depths of up to 500 meters, and could have applications in underwater vehicle and cable inspections as well.
